Overview

The project was to establish basic settings and default applications for Humax's new Over-The-Top (OTT) device. The OTT streams contents from the internet streaming service such as YouTube as well as contents from local TV channels.

My Role

I designed wireframes and interaction rules for cursor interactions, the install wizard (launcher), media player application, wireless display application, and live TV application.

Context and Strategy

As young generations grows, their life patterns were getting more influence on TV contents consuming patterns. The new customers are not a big fan of watching TV contents in front of TV. Instead, they watch Youtube with their laptops or phones. Humax, a Set-top box manufacturer, felt the need to keep up with this trend.

At first, me and my senior designer globalized the one highest menu. We made it the same UI and interaction. And then, we melt the remote controller ‘s key functions into screens. to make them touch based interaction.

I took an application Media Player, which is able to play contents (Video, Music, Photo) with in the same Internet connection.

And I took part in the development of the rest applications such as Live TV and TV Guide.

However, we wanted to know that edited UIs were really effectively adapted to mobile environment. So we decided to test our UIs to non development department employees. To make prototype, we gave our brief wireframes to our team’s developers and asked them to make prototype.

With the prototype we could do a brief user test.

Design Wireframe and specification

Me and my senior designer did user testing and fix our UI repeatedly.

Basically, 5~8 people are ideal number of user research and user testing, however, we picked 4 person and test them using Interview, FGI, questionnaire, and sometimes Video Ethnography.

We extracted summarized meaningful founds. There were more misunderstandings on users than I expected. As user testing and fixing UI were iterating, we could organize our applications within short time.

Result

Certainly, to maintain consistency with two different input based devices was tricky. Set Top box and mobile devices had fundamentally different use cases. However, I could understand and build consistency with them by taking this project.

Takeaways

I designed Media Player application, and it released. These can be found in iTunes and Google Play.
